Be Aware of the Signs of Oral Cancer

Posted .

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, so our dentists and team would like to provide some helpful information about oral cancer and stress the importance of having regular oral cancer screenings. At our office, these screenings are completed during routine dental visits.

Oral Cancer
Oral cancer includes cancers of the lips, inside of the mouth, throat, tonsils and salivary glands. It is imperative that oral cancer be detected and treated early because, like most cancers, oral cancer can be fatal. If oral cancer is not diagnosed early, it is more likely that surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy will be needed.

Signs of Oral Cancer
Although there are some signs that you can watch out for, you may not always notice the early symptoms of oral cancer. That is why you should schedule regular oral cancer screenings in Granada Hills, California, with Drs. Bob and Nicole. In addition to having a screening twice a year, contact White Oak Family Dentistry if you notice any of the following signs:

– A sore inside the mouth or on the lips that will not heal
– Numbness in the mouth
– A lump in the cheek
– Red or white patches inside of the mouth
– Trouble chewing or swallowing food
– Unexplained soreness or discomfort in the mouth
– The sensation that something is stuck in the throat
– Swelling jaw

Feel free to contact our office at 818-363-7484 today to learn more and to set up your next screening. We are here to aid you and your dental health!
